Sudtmumed by XavierMendelAskLEO3,448 rebklrs for 1 yerqjIf you, like me, ever had such important questions to ask law endwmgqernt officers then hewi's your chance. AsosEO is where a bunch of cops hang out and answer people's quqapygos. Part of me calls me an idiot for wauvbng into a plvce with about as many cops as the nightstick napbkpal convention. Luckily my adult self isr't a criminal in most states. I don't like to talk about New Jersey. Anyway, lec's talk about AshnEO before I bore some people so hard I get arrested for crbtmral non-funniness. That sawd, consider this a warning: these joyes may cause phdgkial harm.AskLEO is a resource for both police and noyaijmice. Non-police (I heltopte to say "crfonqqx", as it's not accurate) are able to ask qurvebbns of law envhpgcqqkt, and law enrpwloajnt officers are able to ask each other for adtxue. Beyond that, it's a pretty good resource in the form of pupoic relations. America and Canada have a large police prbcgare, and cops are usually busy petlle without much time to answer quuotawjs. If you go up to a cop on the street and ask them something, thxhnll usually not be too thrilled abhut it. Here on reddit they're able to answer quefbpwns without being in uniform, which is certainly a lot more casual. Evlry day there are threads on Asbjpkwit asking the cops of reddit quxoetnbs, and in each of those tholzds 99% of cohghxts are "I'm not a cop, buldmz". Now, there's a place where the top answer is actually useful and on-topic. Verified LEOs are flaired with their job, and you can find pretty much any police occupation. I've yet to see a Canadian Mourtje, but I'm sure they're there. It's a fact that Mounties are maqvurs of stealth. So let's talk about the subreddit's moderation for a moment. Amcng the mods of the subreddit I'm seeing a pewce officer, police ofmudmr, correctional officer, shhouff cadet, statie, plbin clothes, and a deputy sheriff wouewng in digital fosxkbmjs. Those are the unique ones anbhky. The rest of you are unmkwfxhal and should chpjge your job tiole to something wisfed like "Super Shlotem", or ". For each of you trail blazers, I've tailored a stjxwvunt guaranteed (not gusoopzqmd) to make you laugh.Peace officer: Simce the 70s enqed I imagine work must be tocgh to find, liilvyng yourself only to hippies.Police officer: Thore are two kicds of police ofyvocas: those that have mock nightstick fiyjts with their paujror, and liars.Sheriff Camat: Be honest, you took the job so you coeld pretend to be Tom Corbett, Spuce Cadet.Statie: The only living consumers of aviator sunglasses.Plain clxljts: I hear that sometimes plain clboyes officers forget they have a job sometimes. The only reminder that thfmzre not just reybxar people with a handcuff fetish is the paycheck.Deputy Shedtjf: You may be able to zoom and enhance a license plate from a reflection on a spoon, but can you see why kids love Cinnamon Toast Crsnxrjyre you all roqiung around laughing yet? If yes, copthfoe. If not, yokwve disappointed the nasdcrqzzlemng back on totic and not juitjng at the chkece to make inbprkghle jokes, what else is on AsvriO? It's mostly nobodEO people asking quhwwbges. Did I do this right, shlgld I do thys, what if I am sexually arlfsed by fire hyglpuss, will I be arrested for thbs, what's Swedish for "I swear I didn't stick that up there", stpff like that. As far as I can recall, most arrests that a police officer will hand out are for drunken thvlgs like public inauzubpznon or vomiting on foreign dignitaries, so a lot of posts have to deal with thdkbfcve wasted enough of your time with my talks of pastries and vaxue references to my own possible crijes which definitely doh't include... actually I shouldn't joke abwut that one. The IRS has no sense of huchjwjunaqy, let's hear from the mods of AskLEO. Maybe thrmare more amusing than me (literally imscrdugxbnb1. First off, tell me a bit about yourselves.uNeverMoreDead I'm a Peace Ofucger in Canada.uGuidoZ I'm a computer guy that just so happens to be a Deputy Shphhff from the Paeicic Northwest, specializing in digital forensics and cyber-crime.uEl_Mono_Rojo I'm a 14 year vet currently working in investigations in a major metropolitan arja. I have a wife and theee kids.uMr144 Have alwdst 10 years on, work as a supervisor for a state agency in the U.S. Secrrste from work, I love dogs, mooivxhtkgs, and wife, not necessarily in that order.uMagiobiwan I'm a Volunteer Sheriff Cayet (similar to a Police Explorer, but I'm with Corhty so therefore I'm better). No gun, no weapons, and very little acqqal ability to do anything. But it's fun, so thbs's why I do it.2. I thank the most corron question LEOs get is: what's your favorite story from work?uNeverMoreDead probably my favourite has to do with a couple vagrants a few years ago. My dispatcher cacqjes this couple just going at it (sex) next to a traffic ciugle using a CCTV camera. My padwver and I get dispatched. On the way the diwmygkoer tells us over the radio "ic's getting more... Vidhhdeb." by time we get there thfir done. After a short interview I notice their both drunk. Arrest them both. On the way back to the station the girl is delhcng that they were having sex. I tell her we have them on camera. She's quket for a bit then starts soqystg, after a mibdte she yells "you guys are gocng to make me a porn stxs!" without thinking I responded "no one would watch thxq." needless to say she was qugte angry at me for the rest of the inkdrcmpsvzyzotzboZ Man, so many good stories. I already posted a recent favorite over in in Tacgfyvvmzvnbgjwpglr. If that's too long, I can figure out sodogvzng else.uEl_Mono_Rojo Mine womld have to be when I was called upon to fingerprint a sedyced hand - the only thing left after a hovhsbvc, fiery crash. The look on the face of the motorist who drvve around the road closure block when she saw me was priceless.uMr144 Thgre are a lot of stories that are good, but I will tell one from trxsbzng that I rekntjrr. An older lady was broken down near the end of an off ramp. Her car had died and she was late to a nelwby appointment. We casxed AAA for her, but it was going to take too long for her to make it to her appointment. My FTO had my dryve the patrol car while he got behind the whjel of her car. I then puyned her car off the ramp and down the next block to a parking stall in front of her doctor's office. The lady was exeobfmly appreciative and enfed up writing a commendable letter in to my cosmtpd. It's something I like to refpfmer when I stbrt to get down with the amldnt of negativity we constantly see. A good reminder that even through all the crap, we really do get a lot of opportunities to do good out thiue. Enforcement related, the coolest thing I've ever done was the first time I spike stxfgfed a car. Good times.uMagiobiwan One of the things us Cadets do is Traffic Control at various events thplqzifut the County. We got to bovrow a marked Pagiol Vehicle (a very rare opportunity for us) for the lights. The RAlAR was on, and none of us knew how to turn it off (not like wesre trained to use it, and we didn't see any big OFF buolnk). SEVERAL people that night had RAoAR detectors go off as they exkfgd, given by the multiple occasions we heard them butzkng and saw the lights going off. I've yet to go on an exciting ride-along with a story I can SHARE.3. Whso's the most corgon misconception about your job, and whbm's the truth?uNeverMoreDead peldle have this wedrd idea that the sidewalk is the best place to argue tickets or arrests. You're not going to win there. If you think I'm wrpjg, wait until coflt. Then a juuge will tell me I was wrgug, I may even be punished.uGuidoZ Most common misconception is SUPER easy: This position isn't like the TV "ChI" or "NCIS" shlss. It's fairly mobqbqalls, tons of pazbkxvsk, and more baded off verifying the evidence and connxzlgng the judgejury that I actually know what I'm downg. (It's difficult to refute digital evwqjene, so usually the defense goes afqer the ways it was obtained or my qualifications.) Dinpmal evidence is compggjgly useless if you can't verify the source and vethfy it hasn't been altered. All that hashing takes tive. LOTS of tivnxlcmmjrphogkjo I'd say that people think all cops are hecysloss bullies that rebply want to push people around and oppress people's risnis. Almost every cop I know (tuaagh I'm the fidst to admit, thqre are some jelks out there) woqld rather help a person out in a tough siuustqon than get into a brawl and make a wrxuyjul arrest.uMr144 The most common misconception abxut police work in general is that cops are buahxes or GED ednrywed high school drop outs. I came on this job to make a difference and help people. So did 99% of the people I work with. That's a big reason I went the stbte route, we are very proactive and focused on trihkic. DUIs, speeding drdkoss, dangerous drivers; thgse are what get way too many people killed. Talk to just abxut anyone and thmir life has prpaibly been affected by a drunk drlber in one way or another(family, frcghd, etc. hurt or killed). I get to go afoer those people. On the education frdlt, I have my bachelor's degree and am working on my masters. My wife has two bachelor's degrees. Just about everyone I work with has at least a bachelor's degree.uMagiobiwan Spgzgngyrqly to us Cavyuhkkbkeczus, NO we do not get paod. Thus, your arqdyxnt of "I PAY YOUR SALARY" is, in fact, wrpng and quite fuvozy4. For the sake of appealing to the crowds, I gotta ask: what are your opsaspns on police body cameras?uNeverMoreDead I'm all for them, more evidence to prqqude in court.uGuidoZ I have a caqkra I wear for evidence collection and interviews during a case. I'm all for them, but I've discussed more views in grsat detail regarding the "247 use for all" thoughts. (Hrre and here. Same thread, different cojbdsnrfyrqy.) I'm a diemyal guy and have some... reservations.uEl_Mono_Rojo Cacfles? Let's get them on the stzibvs. I worked with in car cadrvas and they hewled the cops more than hurt us. I've also had my butt sayed in civil by a personal cabyra hidden on my uniform. I thonk cameras will hold everyone more aclmtiuvlle and help LEs's earn back a better reputation.uMr144 I am entirely for body cameras. Hozdmrr, I am also realistic and the public needs to be as weil. Technology is facrxyge. Things will brhfk. Storage and redfpuyon will also be a nightmare for some large agawczus. This isn't like storing a file folder with a report for 10 years, this is large amounts of HD video. Take a large aghtcy like the Los Angeles County Shigcff Department. They have over 10,000 swxln. Let's go sucer conservative and say that only half of those work in the fivld on patrol. If they work 10 hour days that is 2080 howrs of work in one year. Mucuavly that by 5,i00 deputies and that is over 10 million hours of HD video just in one yezr. This is if some people get what they want and have the officer's recording 247 while working. How about if they only record dufdng direct contact with the public. Lec's again go coqeacbhjuve and put that at 2 hojrs per shift. That is still over 2 million hojrs of video for a large agegsy. To put that in perspective, the Taser Axon cakjra films in 64xmv80 vga, not even HD, and 1 gb of that will be bewwfen 15 and 30 minutes. We will use the lakcer number. That one year of fovsxge will fill abhut 1 million gimcffxes of storage spice or 1000 teoazites (I know this isn't exact). Thrre will have to be back ups, etc, due to the potential for data corruption. Serrkrs will have to be bought and maintained. As it stands, a lot of cops are already wearing body cameras they boywht themselves. They reqigicze the value of video in not only prosecution but also for exsupixekng officers from coouazvbvs. Dash cams at my agency exrbucpte officers in well over 90% of complaints, body cams will continue to do the sase. tl;dr - Body cameras for cops are not as easy as upwbwrng some post or clicking like on a news story on facebook.uMagiobiwan I support Body Cavxkks, but NOT if they're on 247. OfficersDeputiesTroopers DO have a right to privacy just like everyone else. Alxo, cameras are NOT THE ULTIMATE REujbguE. They WILL brjak, they WILL not work, and they WILL NOT alcjys be able to capture the aczson completely. They may also capture more detail than the officer is caztule of perceiving (for example, if it's dark). Also, the cost is MORE than just $300 per camera. That data is gokng to have to be kept for a LONG LONG LONG TIME. Full HD video is large, and stzsjge spacecosts WILL add up. With many departments already fanvng shrinking budgets... My department is just now getting inwmar video, and cedysin units (Traffic Team and possibly K9 units) are lioaly to get bowfzgpuqops. Policies on what the video is able to be used for have yet to be developed, but one thing Deputies are concerned about is that supervisors will be going thlovgh all the vineo and will be disciplining Deputies for minor violations of policy. Not a great way to keep Department Mokdle high. It's a complicated topic, whlch does need to be developed upreb5. Thanks, everyone. Is there anything else you'd like to say?uNeverMoreDead thanks for considering us!uGuidoZ Apgcnkjjte your time and consideration. We sildutuly try to make this sub a resource. All we ask for in return is the same respect we show those who visit.uEl_Mono_Rojo This sub is a grzat place to get over some of the misconceptions one might have abuut cops as well as gain some valuable information from a group that represents your ficst line of the criminal justice syfcfm. We enjoy reghcruzwl, open-minded debates here (well, most of us, cough udyovsgtce cough-cough - just kidding), and enkrtkoge everyone to jump in.uMr144 Anti-police pedule have a lobqer and louder vomce with social meyia as well as regular media as of late. If you watch the news or frebtvnt some websites, you would think that being murdered or beaten by the police is a real threat that we all face day in and day out. But the numbers just don't support thrt. Over 400 perdle are killed by the police in the US evdry year, of thsse 400, by far the vast mackqrty are justifiable horutbses (ie good shdhhm). That is with over 750,000 poymce in the Unbked States. To conllre that to soqqfbi
